The Details
The Food: You will get to select from a menu of options curated to support healing and nutrient replenishment after birth. I have experience accommodating many dietary needs/preferences including gluten-free, dairy-free, vegetarian, seed-oil free, and more!
How long and how much? Each session will be around 4 - 5 hours in length. You can stick around or let me do my thing alone in the kitchen. You can choose between 2 to 3 main meal options (30-40 servings total) and 2-4 snack options (20-30 servings total).
The Value: With the cost of the session plus ingredients, the price per serving ends up being around $8-$9. This makes your postpartum meals comparable in price to other ready-made services, but with the added benefit of being tailored to support postpartum recovery and provide nutrition that promotes healing, hormone balance, and replenishment.
This is a bountiful supply of food so you can start your postpartum off with the loving nutrition you need!
FAQ
What types of food do you make?
Postpartum foods should be easy to digest, warming, and rich in specific nutrients that support breastfeeding, hormone balance, tissue repair (both for vaginal and belly births), blood building, and nutrient replenishment. I have a whole menu of options that I have curated to meet the physiological needs of the mother after birth. My food centers healthy fats for brain health, fiber for digestive health, and protein for hormone health. Some of my favorite meals to make include a delicious slow-cooked chicken coconut curry, warming pumpkin lentil stew, and hearty snacks like chocolate cherry granola bars! See in the images above some examples of the meals I have prepared for others.
How would you describe your cooking style?
My foods are prepared entirely from scratch with the highest quality ingredients. I source nearly everything from organic or local sources focusing on pasture-raised & grass-fed meats, free-range eggs, and chemical-free produce. My style of cooking is heavily influenced by my time as a vegetable farmer as well as the time I spend traveling and working in China in my early twenties, a culture with deep traditions in sustaining wellness through food. I offer foods from many different cultural lineages though and I love to incorporate on warming herbs and spices (fresh ginger, turmeric, cinnamon, cardamom, and nutmeg) to enhance the flavor and medicine in each dish.
What qualifications do you have?
This is an important question, and I hold it in high regard. At heart, I am a 'plant lady' and a self-taught chef with a passion for cooking and growing food. For the past five years, I’ve been preparing nourishing meals for mothers in their homes after birth. Before beginning my work as a postpartum chef and doula, I worked at a farm-to-table restaurant just north of Lincoln. My journey has been one of continuous learning, with a deep focus on global postpartum care traditions, Ayurvedic medicine, postpartum nutrition, human physiology, feminine wisdom, herbalism, and culinary arts. I’ve had the privilege of studying under incredible teachers, including Rachelle Seliga of Innate Traditions, Julia Jones of the Newborn Mothers Collective, Sophie Ward Koren of Milk & Seed (now closed), and Radha Schwaller of Bliss Alchemy. The greatest teacher of all, however, has been the practice of offering to others what I first offer to myself. I nourish myself with the same meals I prepare for you, ensuring that my care for you is rooted in the same love and attention I give to myself.
When is the best time to book this service?
The ideal time to book my services is during your second or third trimester, ideally 4 to 6 weeks before your due date. This gives us plenty of time to plan and prepare. The actual meal preparation happens within one month of your due date, ensuring the food is fresh and ready when you need it most. While I typically work with families in advance, I’m also happy to step in with little notice or even after baby arrives if needed, as long as my schedule allows.
What happens after I pay for the meal prep day?
You will receive an email from me with an intake form that will cover your food allergies, food preferences, and a menu of food options. We all have unique flavors and I want this food to be pleasurable as well as nutritious in those early weeks after birth! After this form is completed, we will have an initial phone conversation to finalize details and schedule your visit.
When do visits happen?
They can happen during the weekday or weekend. You can be at the house or you can be away! It is totally up to you. Once you place your order, I will reach out to schedule a day that works for both of us. If your guess date is near and my availability doesn’t allow me to come before baby arrives, I can still stock your freezer after baby is here! You may also request a full refund minus a $15 to cover credit card fees.
What if I had my baby 6 months ago, 2 years ago, or 10 years ago?
You can book this care any time on your mothering journey! This service is designed for mothers who are pregnant or within the first 3 months after birth, but let’s be real: we need to feel nourished by others during all times of this journey! Questions? Email deeprootsdoulacare@gmail.com.
What inspires your work?
I am incredibly inspired by The First Forty Days by Heng Ou, Ayurvedic medicine, and the science of postpartum physiology & psychology. I have studied the care of mothers in the postpartum for over 6 years and love supporting women on their journeys after birth.
This is wonderful - can I work with you in a deeper capacity?
